Add N To {X} - Rare Documentary

Wow. Never heard of this before. Nice.

Add N To {X} - Invasion of the Polaroid People

Bombastic British Rave Rock.

The East - Behind the Scenes Featurette

Saw a trailer for this before something recently. Ever since Super Ellen Page gets my attention. Then Mr. Brown sent me an article yesterday... let me see if I can find it... here it is. As soon as I heard Brit Marling was behind this film my interest soared. This isn't an attraction thing - Brit Marling is for REAL. If you haven't seen Sound of My Voice drop what you're doing and watch it - amazing movie. Has kind of a Marcy Mary May Marlene-meets vibe going on, but there's more to it than that. Don't read anything about it, just see it. Blew me away by the end.

And now this. The girl is good.

Machete Kills - Trailer Numero Uno

A little frustrated - I've been trying to post this off and on for a week or so (when I have time - you may have noticed I haven't exactly been around lately) and it kept getting yanked. Well, it's Machete, so it's worth the wait.

Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork Live in LA

This concert was forty minutes away from me (with traffic and parking) last Thursday. I've been checking the QOTSA site off and on for weeks and still managed to miss the mention of it entirely. Of course it sold out right away, and tickets were (again) ridiculously priced compared to their shows in other cities. I'm not sure if it's the bands or the venues - me thinks a bit of both. Sorry, I LOVE Queens, but I'm not paying $75 to see anyone unless it's Joanna Newsom in a private performance. I'm posting this footage - which I believe is the new album start to finish and then some. I won't pay that tix $$ but I'll sure as hell give the boys my money next Tuesday.

The Trapezoid - Coma_TheTenOf3's

Narcissism day continues. This is something I did several years ago and pretty much forgot about. Put it on the youtubes this evening.

Fearful - Gorilla (Sick to the Back Teeth Remix)

When you release things out into the ether, sometimes they come back to you in unexpected ways...

Dicking around online this morning I ran through a series of lackadaisical searches that somehow ended up with me finding one of my old tracks under my musical nom de plume The Trapezoid on a Russian DJ's mix set. I'd totally forgotten that I had, some years ago, struck an accord with Amduscias Records and sent them my track, "A Season in Hell" for one of their anthology discs. Through that route it ended up here. Perhaps a skosh narcissistic I know, but I can't help wonder about the atmosphere where this would be included in a DJ set - I'm picturing the kind of establishment I wrote it for - a quaalude bar in a minor suburb of the third largest city in hell.

I wish I could have just embedded it but no dice. However, the entire set is worth a listen (~1:22:00 in length) - it's packed with awesome, dark ambient stuff. Follow this link and its the second entry down under the heading Mixes Albums, DJ Sets, titled Exhalation, Vol. 2

David Lee Roth Vs. Poker Sharks

This is just all kinds of unexpected and weird.

BoC - In a Beautiful Place out in the Country

New Boards of Canada - Cold Earth

Via Exclaim.ca via Pitchfork: New Boards of Canada (reportedly) that was premiered before Squarepusher's set last night (Sunday, 5/26/13) at the Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit.

I can't wait for this record. BoC have figured heavily into my listening habits ever since they really hooked me back in the early oughts, and this year especially I've been going through jags of drowning myself in Geogaddi & 2000's ep "In a Beautiful Place out in the Country" - they're fantastic writing music.

Lace Curtain - Falling

Via Heavenisanincubator. This is just FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC!!!

Nostalgia Works in Weird, Weird Ways My Friends

UPDATE: and it would help if I included the video I'm discussing, eh?

Okay, my 80's nostalgia might be drifitng into a dangerous place with this one. I'm sitting in a CBTL working on my novel, using the brilliance that is heavenisanincubator as a soundtrack to finally cut the bullshit and get through these two chapters that are essentially going to make up about a third of the second act of the story but that have sprawled to over 15k words and need some SERIOUS editing. Inbetween tracks the silence from my headphones reveals this song playing on the overhead - it meets with a favorable reaction from me and I linger there listening before looking it up, as I realize I have no idea who sings it.

Nu shooz? Really? Still, in the moment I find that I not only don't hate it (as I'm sure I have at some point in the past) but I'm actually liking it. And it helps me eek around a narrative corner I was until moments ago stuck on, so it gets the benefit of a post. And now that that's all done, it's back to the really good stuff.

Telefon Tel Aviv - Your Every Idol/You are the Worst Thing in the World

The first time I heard these guys it was this track. I had it in our desktop mac and didn't even realize it, had never heard it before. I took a post-work nap and as I came to, swimming in and out of the realm of dreams in the gathering twilight this faded in and stole my imagination. I've been a fan ever since.

Pantha du Prince - A Nomad's Retreat

From the Black Noise album (2010)

Clip (via Aintitcool) - Drafthouse Film's "A Band Called Death"

No this is not about the band that once sang "bathe in blood of the one you've just killed." This is about these awesome, protopunk pioneers:

Bag Raiders - Sunlight (stopmakingme Remix)

Another candidate for greatest remix ever - and it's another Bag Raiders track!!!

Underworld - Cowgirl (Music Video)

From one of the greatest electronic albums ever - hell, one of the greatest albums ever for that matter - dubnobasswithmyheadman

Apparat & Raz Ohara - Holdon (Modeselektor Remix)

With the right subs this shakes the fookin' house mate!!!

Friendly Fires - Paris (Aeroplane Remix ft. Au Revoir Simone

This and the Shooting Stars back-to-back makes for a fantastic 13 minutes or so of music. Apologies for using the one with the heiress as the backdrop, it was that or confections and I'm not particularly fond of sweets at the moment, as I'm drinking this:

Bag Raiders - Shooting Stars (Kris Menace Remix)

Class of 1984 Trailer

Time for Drinking... and Posting

Tonight's set is going to arrive in spurts as I'm having company over to get loaded and watch this:

Bale Out- RevoLucian

RevoLucian's mix never seems to lose its charm.

Rudy Velle and the Soul Phonics

My good friend Anthony turned me on to this band recently. Very, very nice.

David Lynch - Strange and Unproductive Thinking

Lynch's second album is filled from start to finish with wonderfully dark and noirish songs. This is one of two songs that wrap that tone in a bit of an Underworld-like urban throb.

Police Training Video on... SATANISTS!!!

My good friend Michael sent me this recently and I laughed my ass off when I watched it. Apparently this is the real thing, used to teach cops about the dangerous practices of Satanists by a former Satanist.

Uh-huh. I'm assuming that no self-respecting follower of the dark lord would wear his hair like that.

Thanks to the good folks at Dangerous Minds for posting this. They have a more in-depth write up here.

The Neighbourhood - Female Robbery

I followed my hunch and listened to the entire album by The Neighbourhood. It's fantastic. If you're familiar with DJ Muggs' amazing record DUST then you know the Noir Hop version of Greg Duli's Twilight Singer's Fat City (Slight Return). The Neighbourhood's I Love You is a record with a very similar tone.

Patton Oswalt's Star Wars Filibuster - Now Animated!!!

No matter how many times I listen to this it doesn't lose its effect. And now it's animated. Admit it - we all wanted to see Chewbacca's severed head. What's that say about us?

New Track by The Neighbourhood - West Coast

Wow. Old School G-Funk? Really? I only have time to listen to it once (449am - gotta go gotta go). It might work though...

I've really fallen in love with The Neighbourhood's first single "Sweater Weather" - just waiting to see if KROQ (which is usually on often in the shared space at work when I don't have my iPod on) beats it to death for me. If you missed that one, give it two or three listens - me thinks it will grow on you.

Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Wouldn't say they're the best band ever, but they might have written the best songs ever.

Definitely his favorite:

RIP Ray Manzarek w/ Two Keyboard-Heavy #'s by The Doors

RIP Ray Manzarek. These are not only my two favorite songs by The Doors, but both have some bad ass keys courtesy of the late/great Mr. Manzarek. Not to Touch the Earth's dissonant keyboard breakdown really cements my feeling that this song is LSD turned transmogrified into musical form. And Strange Days - I always think of the scene in Oliver Stone's The Doors that this song plays over, with Nico in the Elevator. I really always felt that - and this is no dis to Krieger or Densmore - but if anyone in the band could understand or channel what Morrison was about, judging by his keyboards, it was Ray Manzarek.

You'll be missed Mr. Manzarek.

David Lynch

Besides my wife/friends/family, David Lynch is the one human being who just makes me happy when I look at him.

The new film by Alejandro Jodorowsky. Thanks to Ales Kot for tweeting this to our attention.

More Ian Rubbish, SNL Season Finale, 5/18/13

This is the first thing from SNL in decades that I really dig. I have no idea who the cast member is that plays him - I've obviously seen his name now a couple times but I just don't retain it because I'm wholly unfamiliar with the cast in general. And in Rubbish's case I'd like to keep it that way. I'm more interested at this point in seeing what this particular fiction suit does in the world at large, now that Ian Rubbish has come into a real world context by releasing a free ep (get it here) and being booked to open for the likes of Vampire Weekend in the Steve Buscemi-directed concert.

Parquet Courts - Full Performance

Found this while skulking around on the youtubes. Reminds me of old Tar and Robbers on High Street, maybe some old Sonic Youth and Fugazi thrown in for good measure. However, comparisons aside, Parquet Courts definitely have their own personality; the nice little, sometimes-smooth, sometimes jagged-and-dissonant guitar fills peppered in over perpetually bouncy rhythms. Occasional squalls of feedback and the poignantly accented backing vocals. I like.

Check out Parquet Courts' website here.

A Short Film for Savage's Album-Opening Track "Shut Up"

So thanks to my good friend Jacob I've finally acquired a copy of Savages' debut album Silence Yourself. From the first sound on the record, a sample that sounds like it is from an old movie playing on a tv in the room where one of the instruments is mic'd I knew that this would be a very important record to me. My rapidly escalating anticipation and joy were fed by immediate invocations of The Cure's Pornography, the title track off the 1982 album of the same name. I'm on my second spin in a row of Silence Yourself and it's everything I thought it would be. It's funny how a sound like what many of us refer to, for lack of a better term, as "Post Punk", often feels confined to a specific time and place, but can occasionally be re-created and what's more added to in a way that endears the new artist to fans of the old 'scene', while simultaneously adding to that scene. I guess that's a rambling way of saying this will go very nicely on the record shelf in my mind next to the aforementioned early Cure albums, Bauhaus, Joy Division and Gang of Four.

Skinny Puppy - Last Rights - Track 10 is Missing?

Speaking of Last Rights, I bought the record when I was in high school. I remember my Aunt Dottie gave me several Coconuts Record Store gift tokens that equalled quite a bit of $$ - might have been 3 $20 tokens. I bought 4 CD's - this was like '93. I came away with Slayer - Decade of Aggression, Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger (the SOMMS version), and Skinny Puppy - Last Rights. The other three albums were based on me already liking or at least having heard the groups before - the Skinny Puppy was based on A) the weird industrial Kid Matt Debore in high school who was a year older than me telling me that if I liked Pretty Hate Machine, the keyboards in Skinny Puppy would, "Make you feel like you're god" and B) the cover by I, Braineater:

The Skinny Puppy record scared me. To this day it still scares me, and that my friends, if rare. Usually something catches you offguard or unaware but you acclimate to it. That's only partially true of this record. I may have gotten to know it, gotten to love it, but I still sleep with one eye open around it. And for that I LOVE it.

One thing that always fascinated me about Last Rights was the tracks are numbered 1-9 and then 11. In the Liner notes there's a seemingly casual caption that states/asks, "Track 10 is Missing?". For years I assumed the track was somehow hidden on the album. This was the age of hidden tracks and backwards tracks; tracks hidden after hidden tracks and 12 minutes of crickets to get to the final track, so I just assumed... Remember there was both the They Might Be Giants album and the Course of Empire album that had hidden tracks before the first track on the album. You had to - if I'm remembering this correctly - pause the first track and then search backwards to get to the hidden track. Freakin' crazy!!!

Anyway, the internet is of course great for solving all these little mysteries, but it also robs us of the enigmas of those long gone pre-instant information eras. So here then, at last, is track 10. And here is the explanation, if you choose to read it. It's not that cool.

Skinny Puppy - Lust Chance

My favorite Skinny Puppy album (although I only know like three of them well).

This particular youtubes video: what the heck is up with 0:06-:010? It looks like it's going to be the album cover (brilliant! by I, Braineater) but then there's... that.

My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult - A Daisy Chain for Satan (Acid & Flowers Mix)

There's a bunch of homemade "drug" videos for this on the youtubes, but really, nothing you can put visually to this does the hellish sonic landscape that they create with the music on this one justice.

This came out of nowhere, not even sure what the impetus for this is, but apparently the flavor of this Saturday night is the taste of metal filings - Industrial mix.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Fix Your Face

Dilliner Escape Plan - Live in Hellfest

It's still DEP week here. More live footage.

Oceansize - One Day All This Could Be Yours

My friend Jacob just got me into Oceansize. This particular track struck me - as I was listening to it the very first time - as amazing.

The Game of Love - Michelle Branch and Carlos Santana

Most would laugh to know I really dig this song, however I have two words in my defense: New Radicals. What the hell does the short-lived project of producer/songwriter extraordinaire Gregg Alexander have to do with this? Well, I too have biases against both the self-indulgent noodler Carlos Santana and Disney chick Michelle Branch, but suspend those biases for a moment and listen, really listen to the song (if you're a New Radical fan - if you're not go ahead and laugh at me and skip the rest of this entry 'cuz none nothing here is going to help). Sound familiar? That's because Alexander wrote this song and it sounds exactly like something that could have been on the New Radicals one and only masterpiece album Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too. Sure Ms. Branch's voice is great but a bit sugary, and Carlos does the whole na-na-na, na-na-na thing, but the New Radical's imprint is there. I believe there's a version of Alexander doing this floating around on the youtubes, but it's stripped back demo production does it no credit. This is the kind of thing that, if not full-out produced by that man, needed to be put through the pop machine.

Queens of the Stone Age - My God is the Sun Music Video

I'll admit, at this point I'm barely listening to these Queens tracks, as I sorely want ...Like Clockwork to be an album experience and all of these early released tracks are working against that. Smart in the age of itunes and youtube, but I'm old school and very album-centric, thus I'll post these for others' listening pleasure, but I'm trying (very hard might I add) to abstain from consuming any of this until I hold the record in my hand, can sit down with a good head of smoke and critically listen to this thing from start to finish. A friend messaged me recently saying he'd heard a leak and, to quote, "nothing can prepare you for it." I'm also not one for leaks or torrent sites, so I'm biting my nails and grinding my teeth until June 4th - which really isn't so very far away in normal time.

However while waiting for a new Queens of the Stone Age record, it might as well be A MILLION FUCKING YEARS!!!

Z-Rock Hawaii

Earlier in the week Mr. Brown sent me a text alerting me to the fact that Dick Trickle passed. He spurred me to dig into the Ween catalogue and pump Stroker Ace - the song that really is the only reason why I know who Mr. Trickle was. This put Ween back in my thoughts, and led to my breaking out some White Pepper as I lay around reading on this lazy afternoon. While browsing through my nearly twenty Ween CD's (proper releases, odds-n-sods assemblies I made back during the Napster days and all of their Chocodog releases. I think the only two things I'm missing is, inexcusably, the proper 12 Golden Country Greats - which I always forget I'm missing until I go to listen to it because I have a demo version - and the Kostars record they contributed to with members of Luscious Jackson) and I come across Z-Rock Hawaii, the record the Ween Brothers made back in the day with Japanese insanity enclave The Boredoms. The entire thing is a masterpiece from a different world, but these are my two favorite songs from it.

People of the North (Oneida)

There are a ton of great band's I got into through my wife when I first met her. Helen Stellar, The Coral, 16 Horsepower, Add N to X, White light Motorcade to name a few. Oh, and Oneida, the shifting, guttural attack on order and sanity that gave us modern classics such as Enemy Hogs and A Place Called El Shaddai's. I've lost track of Oneida in recent years, so it was with great interest that I stumbled upon People of the North, an Oneida off-shoot band who are prepped to release new record Sub Contra on June 11th via Thrill Jockey.

People of the North are Kid Millions and Bobby Matador, and while I couldn't find any tracks from Sub Contra the above track is from 2010's Deep Tissue by the band. Nice. Also, here's an oldie but a goodie from Oneida:

Hordak

What can I say? I'm a sucker for Hordak.

Turn Pale

And as long as I'm thinking about them now, here's some Turn Pale. Follow the widget to their bandcamp and name your price for some really awesome music!

Young Boys - New York Sun

I'm really digging New York Sun by Young Boys. It immediately evoked old Rough Trade, as well as, in particular, a band I really like called Turn Pale.

Check out Young Boys' label, holloweyedrecords.

Interview: Ryan Black's Tension

Ryan Black has a kickstarter going for his AWESOME comic tension. I interviewed him recently via email - you can check out his kickstarter video and contribute here and you can read the interview on Joup here.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Gold Teeth on a Bum

Still Dillinger week here on my blog. I was able to pry One of Us is the Killer out of the car stereo twice since I got it - once yesterday for a rousing jag with Calculating Infinity and again today while stuck in terrible traffic on the 405. This time it was Option Paralysis.

Youth Code Live - Nothing Changes, NY

Really digging on this group right now. Go to Brooklyn Vegan here and scroll down - some fantastic pictures from Wednesday's show in NY.

Youth Code

I LOVE this. Via Brooklyn Vegan.

NEW LIARS!!! FOR FREE

Go here - you enter your email and the country you live in and they'll give you two, count 'em two new Liars tracks!!! This is the video to one of them. New Liars is always good.

Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out

A facebook post from my friend John made me dart over and listen to this song. Always loved it but it's been about a year since I've heard it. The bass line has always struck me as a proto-techno bass line. Plus this particular youtube user's video is pretty cool.

Poolside - Give it a Rest

IO Echo - Addicted

Wow. This is awesome. I have something to go between Bat for Lashes and Zola Jesus, maybe wash it back with some Au Paris. I know NOTHING about IO Echo - just heard this on Garth Trinidad's show on KCRW. I'm guessing you'll see more of her/their stuff in the next few days, as my research commences.

New Franz Ferdinand!!! Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Actions

Releases 8/26/13. Very Nice. I'm quite a big fan of the first record. The guitar sound is to die for.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Crossburner

Okay, it's either this, the title track or When I Lost My Bet that stands as my favorite track on the new album so far. But every track is just so damn good and the flow of the album -ALWAYS a super important thing to me - is the best flow maybe since Calculating Infinity.

The bass guitar on this record CRUSHES.

Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood Released Black Pudding on Tuesday...

... where the hell was I? Thanks to mxdwn for waking my ass up to it's awesome, awesome arrival.

RIP Dick Trickle w/ WEEN's Stroker Ace

Taking a suggestion from Mr. Brown and going public with it - this one's for the late Mr. Trickle.
"Light up the wheels and go for brokeStomp that pedal with a sniftin strokeSmack that roadblock caught in a pickleI'm gonna hit that line like old Dick Trickle"

New Queens of the Stone Age Video: "If I Had a Tail"

Good lord. There must be video content for almost every track on the album by now.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Live 2010

x

Last one for tonight. Tomorrow I'll have had a day to let the record percolate in my ears and I'll post what my favorite track is.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Parasitic Twins Video

Continuing DEP week here, on my blog.

Funny or Die: She-Ra

And Another New Queens of the Stone Age Animated Video for "Kalopsia"

I'm posting these last two out of order, but I was out of order yesterday, so I'm behind.

New Queens of the Stone Age Animated Video for "Keep Your Eyes Peeled"

Cannot wait for this record!!!

Dillinger Escape Plan Interviewed by Metal Injection (ow!)

Continuing DEP week. Purchased my copy of One of Us is the Killer this afternoon. I LOVE it - possibly my favorite DEP record since 1999's Calculating Infinity. Possibly. @7:30: "It''s like We Are the World,", this record - exact reference I would have used.

Primus - Live 1987

Not great, but insanely good sound considering it was probably recorded with a hand held. I don't think I even know what this first song is.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity (full)

The Masterpiece. I love all their albums, and I love Greg on vox, but this a classic.

Dillinger Escape Plan w/ Original Singer Dimitri Cover Slayer

Again, and this time it's worse, the sound just isn't there on this. But you see why I posted it.

I've been scouring the youtubes for classic DEP footage with original singer Dimitri Minakakis, but that's going back to the very early oughts and there just doesn't seem to be a lot of footage of those days that's GOOD.

Queens of the Stone Age Perform New Song "I Sat By the Ocean"

On Jools Holland. I confess, I have no idea who Jools Holland is. You can go to Pitchfork here and also view the band performing another new song, "My God is the Sun" on the same show.

Dillinger Escape Plan w/ Mike Patton 2002 - Covering Justin Timberlake's "Like I Love You"

Continuing Dillinger Escape Plan week in honor of their new record having been released today (I HAVEN'T GOT MINE YET!!!).

The audio's not great on this - from where it was recorded the guitar is too loud and a horribly muffled mid-range blah, and the camera angle leaves a lot to be desired, but still, awesome to see them doing my favorite Justin Timberlake song w/ Patton.

New TV on the Radio!!!

Props as always to Mr. Brown for sending me this one. Awesome!!! Can't wait for the new record.

Monday, May 13, 2013

Dillinger Escape Plan - Sunshine the Werewolf

In honor of their new record, One of Us is the Killer, dropping tomorrow I do proclaim this week Dillinger Escape Plan week (I guess I should have started it yesterday, but if you work for a living Monday's really the start of the week, isn't it?).

I'll be posting clips all week my friends. Starting with this gnarly live one of Sunshine the Werewolf from 2004's Miss Machine, the band's first album with Greg Puciato as lead vocalist (former singer Dimitri Minakakis left after 1999's MASTERPIECE Calculating Infinity). Is this my favorite track on Miss Machine? I don't rightly know, but I love it dearly.

Al.B.Sure - Night and Day

Never having been into this song before I can assure you, I am as surprised as you are that ever since my friend Ray played this in his car a couple of months ago I have become infatuated with it. There is no irony at work here, I legitimately have fallen for this song.

Arrested Development Trailer

Nice.

Agents of SHIELD trailer

So Coulson does indeed live. GOOD news.

New Record by The Fall

Their 30th record!!! YowzA! Titled "Re-Mit"(via Brooklyn Vegan)

My favorite track by this band will always be:

That song is just INSANE when it kicks in fully.

The Rolling Stones & Katy Perry - Beast Of Burden

I never would have guessed I'd wake up at 430AM to find this, but that's that. Weird, but makes sense based on the way the Stones are handling things for this tour.

2 New Queens of the Stone Age Tracks via CoS

Went up at some point yesterday. Go to Consequence of Sound to read about the why's and wherefore's.

Sunday, May 12, 2013

Sunday Slayer - Christ Illusion

My wife interviewed Tom Araya when this record came out. I remember being psyched that A) Mr. Dave Fucking Lombardo was back in the band and B) Mr. Rick Fucking Rubin was back in the producer's seat. It did not disappoint then, and in pulling it out for the first time in a couple years I remember (my go-to Slayer records being Live Undead, Decade of Aggression and Reign in Blood - I really need to hunt down another copy of Show No Mercy).

And you know, I'm not one for stupid internet memes, but...

Mario Cotto, Hana & Larry Gus

Well, they may have taken my Rollins show off Saturdays but Mario Cotto's still on Midnight to 3AM and he is known to bring the noise. Just spun this and I fell in love.

sys.exe - Sundown (radio edit)

Nice.

Chairlift - I Belong in Your Arms - In Japanese!

Weird but still awesome

Liars - Brats

Liars!

The Boredoms - Acid Police

For years I believed the song title and assumed he was saying "Acid - Police". Now I think it sounds more like "Asshole Portishead".

But I like Portishead, Yamatsuka!

Killing Joke - Corporate Elect

Posted earlier, along with some unreleased stuff, by the mighty Brooklyn Vegan.

Killing Joke - Love Like Blood

The song that got me into this band circa almost ten years ago. Rather late, still better than never. We all know they were a big influence on metallica, but me thinks motley crue as well - main riff to dr fullfood clearly taken from/inspired by this song.

Blut Aus Nord - MoRT ch. 2

From one of their albums I don't own yet.

Edgar Wright's The World's End

Watching this I realize I've somehow fallen into a place where I take Edgar Wright's movies for granted. This reminded me how awesome they are.

Gary F$&king Oldman stars in Video for David Bowie's The Next Day

...and Marion Cotillard. And is that Tilda Swinton, or do I just have her on the brain because of the The Stars (are out tonight) video from a few months ago? This is the work of the same director, Floria Sigismondi, who I'd not realized until now directed 2010's Runaways film, basd on the band of the same name*. I'm becoming quite the fan of Ms. Sigismondi's work, and this new Bowie video is a great example why. She moves in a very particular way within the setting - it's almost dream-like. The Next Day is wonderfully strewn with blasphemy and, did I mention, GARY OLDMAN!!!

Also, I should add NSFW, which appears to be becoming the new music video paradigm?

New Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings

They've been off my radar for a while but between 100 Days, 100 Nights and the unbelievable work-for-hire the band did on the late Amy Winehouse's blow-up (but still remarkable) Back to Black I became a quick fan. As has been my mantra while I work on my novel, this isn't exactly where my mind is at right now, but I can still spin it once, love it (I DID!) and pass it on!

Jello Biafra & the Guantanamo School of Medicine - Mid East Peace Process

There's always room for... oh, no. That's lame. But this song is most definitely NOT!

PVT - Homosapiens

New PVT! I got wind of their new record a couple months ago but couldn't find anything about it on their labels website. It fell off my radar and now I find that the freakin' thing came out about the time I was researching it. WTF?!? Oh well, at least it's here now.

Special thanks to my good friend Jacob for turning me onto these guys.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Mermaids

Video that was shot at LA's Henry Fonda Musicbox back in February. String section and children's choir provided by Silver Lake Music Conservatory.

The Rolling Stones + Tom Waits: Little Red Rooster

First Mick Taylor. Then the Echo. Now Tom Waits. The Stones are really making a run at the 'cool factor' again.

It's working.

Bibio - A tout a l'heure: Music Video

Courtesy of Warp records.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Prancer: Lyric Video

Jesus I can't wait for this album.

Queens of the Stone Age - I Appear Missing Video... kinda

Video for, um... 3 minutes of a new Queens song that is actually 6 minutes long. SO, I'm not sure if the video is parsed like the song and there's more a'coming, or if this is a promotional thing. Either way, NEW QUEENS!!!

Once again, I'm re-posting via Brooklyn Vegan, read what the masters have to say about this here.

SHELLAC nearing completion of new record! YAY!!

Thank to Brooklyn Vegan for posting this. Excellent Italian Greyhound was FANTASTIC, and I am well past needing a new record from these guys.

This is a pretty awesome interview.

"You don't want to be shown up by Uriah Heep." Not possible Steve, not possible.

Flaming Lips - You Lust

The Flaming Lips - You Lust (NSFW) from Delo Creative on Vimeo.

Weird. Creepy and um... wow.

I should definitely add NSFW. I find it interesting that the visual component of this band has become almost almost as regularly intense as their sonic side. Might we see a video for every song on The Terror?

No Joy - Hare Tarot Lies

Could have done without the puking, but very interesting video and great song.

Ryan Gunwitch-Black's Comic Tension: The Kickstarter

Ryan Gunwitch Black's Kickstarter for his independently created comic Tension. Looks outstanding. He keeps a great blog here.

The Muppets Perform Slayer's Behind the Crooked Cross

Still reeling from the loss of Jeff Hanneman earlier in the week I went looking for some clips and found this. Amazing!

Hilarious! Reggae Version of megadeaf's symphony of destruction

This is amazing!!! Mr. Brown just sent this to me, immdiately upon hearing it I knew I had to repost it for everyone's comedy enjoyment. I HATE megadeth. I HATE dave mustaine (not mortal hate, but you know, he's just such a fuckin' wanker). I especially HATE everything from this stupid album, the album where he looked at metallica's then newfound commercial success and said, "ME TOO! ME TOO!". At least w/ larsy-poo and crew you can see how, after making a technical masterpiece like ... And Justice for All, who wouldn't want to step back a bit and simplify the operation. You know, call in a big producer like Bob Rock and have a go at it. But Mustaine, ugh. countdown to irrelevancy is such a forced attempt. And he drew up the characature he would enforce as his brand logo and even went so far as to go back and re-record the vocals for the four good (and two magnificent) albums he'd created up to that point. metallica might have sold out, but mustaine became a fucking whore and now twenty years down the line the responsibility of that has eaten away his brain and caused him to become a complete right-wing fruitloop. And as such, when I see people lob intelligent criticism or witty insults his way, I laugh and give a thumbs up. That's what we have here. Nice work Andy Rehfeldt, nice work.

Johnny Marr & Andy Rourke Perform How Soon is Now?

Whoah.

You can get the full details about this show on Brooklyn Vegan here.

If you listen to the excited roar of the crowd at about 0:47 secs, just as Marr introduces Rourke, you can hear the fact dawning on them they are about to witness something amazing. I admit - I'm not usually one for reunions and I only got into the Smiths about five years ago, but once I 'discovered' them they became one of my favorite bands of all time. Just hearing this while I type is giving me chills. And of course this track is a classic - even before being a Smiths fan this one meant something to me.

I'd still wager no matter what we'll never see these guys joined by a certain Mr. Morrissey, so this is probably as close as we're ever going to get.

But then, I've been wrong many times in my life. I'd like to be wrong about that.

Thanks to Brooklyn Vegan for posting this and making my day pretty much within moments of my waking up.

Massive Attack - Be Thankful for What You Got

Massive Attack - what more is there to say. And there's nothing more to post, cuz I'm out. This feels like a good way to wind down another Saturday night.

Underworld - Pearl's Girl (LIVE)

Not just my favorite Underworld song, but one of my favorite songs period.

The Streets - Weak Become Heroes

Possibly my favorite Streets song.

Todd Terje - Inspector Norse

Continuing the new vibe. Reflections on the past give way to contemplations of N.O.W.

Ok - something New: Pole Folder

Well, not new new, but something not from my own personal reminiscences this evening. Just heard Jason Bentley spin this on KCRW.

BRMC - In Like the Rose

Larry Fessenden's Beneath

Interrupting our regularly scheduled program. You had me at "directed by Larry Fessenden". Thank Bloodydisgusting.

Blue Karma - Left Behind

Not affiliated with tim lehaye and jerry jenkins.

Oasis - Fucking in the Bushes

Oasis - Fucking in The Bushes from Giancarlo Gamero on Vimeo.

Easily my favorite song by a band that has a lot of amazing songs.

Stereophonics - Mr. Writer

Backing vocals to this track still give me chills.

Saint Germain - Sure Thing LIVE!!!

Best song ever? Some days.

There's a skosh of distortion on the recording, but the performance is the shit!

Over the Rhine - The Body is a Stairway of Skin

Old school trip hop.

Helen Stellar - Newton

Tomorrow is the ten year anniversary of the night I met my wife. I was in a band called The Yellow House and she was a music journalist. She'd heard she should come to see us. She did. The band played. Afterward we were introduced. We hung out all night, drinking pints of beer and talking. We made plans to see one another again. I have been ecstatically happy ever since.

Early on she made me a bunch of mix-discs. I'm going to do the drinking and posting thing tonight and a lot of what I post will be stuff she turned me onto. All of it is awesome. She is good like that.

Rosenkopf - Burning Spirits

So I was hunting around on my favorite music blog heavenisanincubator and on accident I hit the 'Next Blog' button that blogger puts at the top of all its pages. It's an interesting idea - kind of a way to just move to a random blog, or just to get to know your neighbor. Well, the next blog over from the mighty 'incubator is the tour diary for a band called Rosenkopf. I'd never heard of them before and immediately flipped over to youtube and looked them up, them flipped back and began reading. I'm not entirely sure what year this tour diary is from, I believe it was 2012. You can click on the widget above and follow back to Rosenkopf's bandcamp where the track is available for free download. There's also a host of stuff on youtube which I'm kinda working my way through now, inbetween repeated listens to The Oceans' Pelagial. I've posted one of the live tracks below.

Dillinger Escape Plan @ Golden Gods: Lots of blood, fire and insanity, + Chino Moreno for a Depeche Mode Cover

Very special thanks to HaloMillenium for the cleanest rip of this I've seen yet. The camera-in-front-of-the-tv technique versions that began popping up the day after the show were so bad not only did I not re-post any of them, I didn't even watch 'em. Props for all who attempted just in the name of getting it out there, but it was just not happening.

Warning: the sound mix here is off - Greg Puciato's vocals are waaaay up in the mix and the instruments are waaaay down. I think this makes the material come off a bit more disjointed than it actually is.

Danzig & Doyle Golden Gods: FULL SET!!!

That's much better. Fucking Death Comes Ripping into Skulls? Nice. Thanks to stormrider3 for posting this. Check out their youtube page I linked to above - lots of footage from last night.

Danzig & Doyle @ Golden Gods 2013

Last night. This is the only halfway decent footage I've found so far, I'll try to post more as footage filters in. Classic.

The Ocean - Pelagial

So I've put down the Slayer for a bit (couldn't find my original cassette copy of Seasons in the Abyss so I had to walk away for a while) and started my first pass through the new album by The Ocean, Pelagial. It is incredible. The concept for the album is just mind-blowing, especially when you listen to it and realize they pulled it off. From their (awesome) website:

The concept of the album is made evident in its title, Pelagial. Listeners will be further submersed as they journey with the band, beginning at the surface of the ocean and plunging through all five pelagic depth zones: epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathyalpelagic, abyssopelagic, and hadopelagic. In synch with diminishing light and increasing pressure as one dives or sinks deeper into the ocean, the album begins rather light and progressively gets heavier and slows as the band reaches the unfathomable depths of the hadopelagic zone, characterized by complete darkness and a thousandfold increased pressure as compared to surface level. What is remarkable about Pelagial is that this is not some detached conceptual idea; this can actually be heard and felt while listening to the album.

Palms - Patagonia

I've seen Palms name bandied about on various music sites recently but hadn't paid attention at all really. Now I see Chino from the Deftones and a bunch of the guys from Isis are in it. I'm not familiar with Isis at all. I know this is probably a major overlook on my part, they've been on my list for some time, I just haven't gotten to them yet. But I've always dug Chino, and especially after Koi No Yokan being my album of the year last year, and a record I still ADORE, Moreno's name made Palms shoot to the top of my list. Thanks again to bloodydisgusting and go below for a listen to another Moreno side project that I LOVE, Team Sleep.

Todd and the Book of Pure Evil Kickstarter

I've still only seen the first four episodes of season 1, so I'm not even watching this video yet to avoid the spoilers. Thanks to Bloodydisgusting for posting this. I'd imagine moving forward the only way anything is going to get made is with a kickstarter campaign first, to prove to deeper pocket investors that there's interest. While that's fine for pre-established artists/franchises, that's gonna suck for newcomers.

RIP Jeff Mother Fucking Hanneman

I came home to find Pelagial, the new album by The Ocean had arrived, and my wonderful wife had purchased me the Twin Peaks Archive (another post coming on that) but the second I heard this terrible news about Hanneman I knew exactly what was going on the stereo.

My three favorite Slayer songs from various eras. Spirit in Black features what is one of my favorite guitar solos of ALL TIME and it's Jeff playing it at about 1:43

And a great interview with Hanneman and Araya from 1986!!! (which also has a live version of Hell Awaits in the middle of it).
