Other Lives

I just discovered the group Other Lives via Mxdwn's Raymond Float and his twitter. I clicked a link, saw the word "phantasmagorical" and immediately fell in love with what I heard. This track reminds me of Calexico if they had a little more Bela Lugosi and a little less Robert Rodriguez (not a dis - I love Calexico). That's an analogy that only goes so far though; as I move through other material by the band I'm finding they are actually quite unlike anything else that I have heard before. Rituals, the band's new album, just came out on May 4th via Play It Again Sam, so I'm going to have to acquire a copy of that ASAP.

Black Lips - Nightmare Field

Look at the Black Lips, with the crazy switchblade choreography! Awesome!

I had started getting into The Black Lips a couple years ago and then kinda forgot about them. Within the last few months however, as internet chatter led up to the March 14th release date of their newest record Underneath the Rainbow, the have once again become ever more interesting to me. Now this video for Nightmare Field, which is the first video since Qui's marvelous Mucho Sex in America to really make me stand up and say, "YES!" Great song, great video.

Via the mighty Mxdwn!

New Qui - Mucho Sex In America (via Mxdwn)

Ahhh, the fine folks at mxdwn have once again made my day by posting a heads up that Los Angeles' own Qui have an album due on February 25th. Go here to read more about it!

I love this video. I'm not positive but it seems to me that at least part of the vocals for the song were recorded live while they were filming this, which adds an extra layer to the overall song and how it meshes with this wonderful visual tomfoolery. Props Laban Pheidias who directed it, Danozone who shot it and Occupy Films.

Kate Nash - I Hate You This Christmas

Via mxdwn. You know, if my friend Manny (RIP and I miss you this day of the year most of all sir) hadn't turned me on to Kate Nash like six years ago I would have thought she was a new artist based on this. I dig the song first and foremost because she's British, second because it's catchy, but what did it for me was FIDLAR scrawled on her guitar. Fucking awesome.

And that's Christmas folks. Merry.

Voyeur - Little Death

Wow. Kind of speechless at this. Found Voyeur via a review on mxdwn, where they referred to them as "Trance Horror Lounge".

How could I not look that up. I don't know if I exactly agree with that referral tactic, but I've only heard two tracks thus far.

UPDATE: Wow, if this is not grabbing you go right to the final song, Little Death and then work back from the beginning (I originally began this first experience with Voyeur from the middle song, String due to the curiosity for it that Alec Cole stirred up in me via his review at mxdwn. String is fantastic, but taken in the context of the entire progression I now definitely dig the Trance Horror Lounge thing.
