Second Song Second Time Around

 

Yesterday, I began my day with some TV on the Radio. Man, I miss these guys. Technically, I don't think they ever actually broke up; however, their most recent record, Seeds, came out a decade ago now, and their hiatus has lasted just about as long. 

Mr. Brown recently pointed out that the new Chelsea Wolfe album I've been spinning so much was produced by TVOTR's Dave Sitek, so maybe that's why I've been thinking of them lately. 

Interestingly enough, Sitek also produced Scarlett Johansson's 2008 album of Tom Waits' covers, Anywhere I Lay My Head. I remember having an advance copy of that back when it came out, but I don't remember a single thing about what the record actually sounds like.

Watch:

Kimo Stamboel's new film Dancing Village: The Curse Begins recently received a trailer. The only film I know by Stamboel is 2019's The Queen of Black Magic, but it's a f**king DOOZY to say the least. 

I watched about half of this trailer and am totally in. There's something so visceral about Stamboel's work. Some of it's the setting—the way he uses the jungle—I can almost feel the humidity and discomfort, the dirt and insects. But there's also an almost Body Horror element to some of his kills. They really leave an impression. 

The idea that this will be in selected theatres - I'd imagine I have almost no hope of seeing this in Clarksville, but then again, I've been surprised a lot lately by what's come through my town. So we'll see.

Opeth isn't the only band that breathes November to me. TV On the Radio has also long been synonymous with the penultimate month of the year, though I'm not entirely sure why. With both bands, I think it goes back to the first couple of years after I moved to L.A. I was really digging in and establishing myself, and I spent a lot of time listening to music (as I always do). Whatever the reason, TVOTR is always a band I "feel" more when the skies are grey and the air has a nip to it.

Watch:

Yesterday I watched the latest film to hit Shudder, Lynne Davison's Mandrake. Super solid Irish Folk Horror. 

If you dig flicks like Lorcan Finnegan's Without Name or George Popov's The Droving, you'll dig this one. Very subtle, brooding and ominous. Here's the press solicitation:

Mandrake follows probation officer Cathy Madden, who is given the task of rehabilitating notorious killer ‘Bloody’ Mary Laidlaw back into society after twenty years of jail. Cathy has always believed that every client deserves a shot at redemption, but her beliefs are firmly tested when two children disappear near Mary’s farm.

This is the kind of movie where the setting is as much a character as the actors, and Davison and crew could not have chosen wiser. Mary's "farm" has so much character, you can practically smell the place whenever the film takes you there. Mary herself, played by Derbhle Crotty could not be creepier in her stoicism, leaving you wondering about her motives and machinations pretty much from the first time she appears on screen. Likewise lead Deirdre Mullins's aforementioned Officer Madden. Mullins plays this character so close to the chest that you can feel the disappointments in her history before they're ever mentioned in the film. 

Over the last year, Folk Horror has become such a thing that I went from being excited by it to having a healthy dose of skepticism whenever a new film hits. Mandrake, however, is quite solid and a definite recommendation for those nights when you're looking for something more cerebral and less bombastic. Not that there isn't blood, because there most certainly is that, too.

New Federale Album Drops Today!!!

No Justice, the new album by Federale dropped today, and it's every bit of cinematic, desert-washed goodness you'd expect. I'm relatively new to the band, having first been exposed this past spring when I saw A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night on Joe Bob Briggs' The Last Drive In. If you know that film, then you know what an awesome soundtrack it has; Federale has several of the key tracks on it.

I'm definitely in a tailspin through the 00s right now, and one of the band's that acted as a tent pole for my musical obsessions during those dark years was TV On The Radio.



It's funny that I never really got to know their last album, Seeds, so in keeping with my MO, I kinda saved one for later. I know they never officially broke up, and I'm sure we are bound to see a new album from them at some point, but it's been going on six years, and I've been away from them as long as they've been away from the world at large, so right now, things feel a little final.

This song really makes me want to start the Breaking Bad re-watch I have planned in the near future.

Always a good card to see, this reads to me as success coming TODAY on a short I've been hammering for well over a year (off and on). I recently set aside everything else to focus on this one because I have a very cool submission opportunity, so hopefully, the appearance of this card bodes well.

Tunde Adebimpe's New Band

Lots of new music surfacing again. Not too long ago TV On the Radio's new track Mercy surfaced. Now we get a track from TVOTR's Tunde Adebimpe's band Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band. I really dig this a lot. The band's debut EP will be out 10/01 on ZNA Records (which I cannot currently find a website for) and as with all other TVOTR-related music I will be buying it.

Loved this song the first time I heard it, day the album was released as I opened my old store early, had another manager sell it to me and then sat in the office counting out drawers and giving it a once over. Loved it even more when it was used in the closing sequence/credits of Breaking Bad Season 2, episode 10.
