Butthole Surfers Week Day 3:

I had to pause Butthole Surfers Week for traveling back home to Tennessee, but now that I'm here, let's get right back to the madness. Did you know the original name these guys had was The Inalienable Right to Eat Fred Astaire's Asshole? You probably did, however, it makes me happy just to type that here.

Watch:

I had the chance to re-watch two movies last week that share a love of color and intention.

This was a bit of a distracted viewing; I stumbled across Mandy playing on Shudder.TV and let it roll while I edited last week's episode of The Horror Vision Presents: Murderboard - A True Detective Night Country Discussion, pausing from my duties to soak up key moments. At this point, Panos Cosmatos' sophomore feature is so much a part of me that I've become holographically entwined with it. That is to say, I can watch a little and it contains the entire film.

Ryan Gosling's only Writer/Director feature to date, every time I watch Lost River, my love of the film and its characters deepens. Missi and I did an Elements of Horror on this one, listen to it HERE.

Playlist:

Ready for the World - Oh Sheila (12" single)

Nabihah Iqbal - Dreamer
Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest
Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country EP
Frankie and the Witch Fingers - Data Doom
The Bronx - (II)

Mark Lanegan sings Joy Division's Disorder for Charity

Posted on Peter Hook's youtube channel. Here's the verbiage:

"As part of Sweet Relief Musicians Fund's recent 'For The Crew' fundraising event, Hooky's son Jack teamed up with Mark Lanegan (Mark Lanegan Band/Screaming Trees), Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder and drummer Shane Graham for a special live version of the Joy Division classic 'Disorder'. All funds raised by this event went towards supporting out of work touring crews who have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Please consider making a donation if you are able to: https://givebutter.com/FORTHECREW

If you're in the US you can also text FORTHECREW to (202) 858-1233."

Watch:

I had yesterday off, so Tuesday night K and I had a bit of a marathon. Being that it was my birthday, I wanted to reconnect with what I've come to think of my 'power movies.' There are quite a few, but here's what I went with:

Followed by:

Rounded out by my second viewing of Ryan Gosling's gorgeous directorial debut in the last two months (with a third already scheduled):

This was a great night for me; it'd been longer than I realized since my last viewing of my favorite Horror film of the 00s. Kill List I'd only seen once before but it left such a huge impression on me I'd been planning a follow-up for years. Luckily, thanks to Anthony (Butcher) from The Horror Vision, I located a B-Region BR for $5 a few months ago, so now I can watch my favorite Ben Wheatley film whenever I want. And Lost River has just become one of my all-times. I seriously think about re-watching it every day.

Every. Day.

Playlist:

Deafheaven - Ordinary Corrupt Human Love
Cocksure - TVMALSV
Etta James - Eponymous
Tennis System - Technicolour Blind
The Dead Milkmen - Welcome to the End of the World
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Abbatoir Blues
The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes are the Last of the Great Thunderstorm Warnings
Genghis Tron - Dream Weapon

Card:

I felt honored and ecstatic to do my first birthday pull from Missi's Raven Deck. I wasn't disappointed, either:

The presence of Boaz and Joachim are very positively charged images for me, one of the reasons this might be my favorite card from this deck. Plus, I've always considered a strong, mythical female presence as the closest thing to a supreme power in the cosmos of my life. Here, flanked by Soloman's pillars and a weird forest-derived rendition of the Tree of Life, I see nothing but the actualization of the processes I have put into place over the last several years.

2019: March 25th

I am loving the new Finn Andrews' record One Piece at a Time. Another album that is perfect all the way through. Currently, this is my favorite song, although I suppose that may change as on an album this strong, all ten tracks will most likely cycle through as a favorite at some point.

My friend Jesus gifted me a copy of Pornsak Pichetshote and Aaron Campbell's Infidel, and after only  a few pages in, I can attest that all the great things I've read online are 100% accurate. Described as, "A haunted house for the 21st Century, Infidel follows an American Muslim woman and her multiracial neighbors who move into a building haunted by entities that feed off xenophobia." Amazing, high concept, right? Well, so far the execution is tense to say the least, and Campbell's art is ridiculous it's so fantastic. Here's a sample:

Finally watched Ryan Gosling's 2014 debut as Writer/Director Lost River. Wow. I was a little tired through the beginning, blinking out in micronaps, and I thought that might affect my experience, but it did not. Reminiscent of Harmony Korine's Gummo meets David Lynch's Straight Story, Lost River's third act pretty much forever endeared the movie to me. The imagery Gosling puts on screen is breathtaking, and Johnny Jewel's OST is perfect.

Oh, and Ben Mendelsohn and Matt Smith are fantastic as two very different varieties of heavies.

Playlist from 3/24:

Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats - Bloodlust

Card of the day:

Lots of Earthly concerns, because I've not been as vigilant as I need to be with money. It's very easy to slip, with all of these wonderful boutique companies out there servicing fans of everything from David Lynch to any comic book you've ever read. To move forward, sometimes we have to let ourselves take a few steps back. Does that make sense, or am I mixing metaphors and scenarios? It's early, off to work.

Mike Patton Scores "The Place Beyond the Pines"

I'd almost forgotten about Patton's involvement in this. I'm curious about the flick, but MORE curious about the soundtrack, which was composed by none other than Mike Patton and is scheduled to be released on May 7th. I'm a big fan of Patton's other soundtrack work, most especially for the short film A Perfect Place staring Bill Moseley and Mark Boone Junior, which I believe is still available from Ipecac records as a DVD/CD set. Here's the trailer:
