Isolation: Day 52 Surprise You're Dead

I've been digging into Revocation's back catalogue on my writing sessions, and this FNM cover popped up at the end of 2011's Chaos of Forms. Great album, great cover!  My writing music has been an example of the pendulum effect I complain about everywhere else in life; if I told you to consider Revocation and Lustmord as two nodes on the graph, you'd get the idea, yeah? It makes for some interesting ideas, one of which pretty much just changed the entire course of the third act for the better! Now I'm chasing that down and preparing for the final edit, which seems a bit like the ghost house that I relentless walk toward but never achieve. I have faith, though. Faith, and a killer work ethic. And music like this to keep me properly motivated (That and gallons and gallons of coffee, which I think is starting to fuck with my nervous system).

Bandcamp did another Artist Relief day this past Friday. I snagged the new, Digital Cocksure EP and a vinyl copy of their 2014 debut T.V.M.A.L.S.V., along with a copy of a single the Living Nudes released a while ago. I paid more for all three than asked for, because, while I didn't have a lot of money to throw at all the independent artists I love, I had some, and wanted to make it go as far as possible for the artists, not my collection.

So much new music this past week because of the Bandcamp relief, it was hard to narrow things down. I think I did pretty good, though.

After missing it at last year's Beyondfest, I finally got around to watching Travis Stevens' Girl on the Third Floor. I dug this one quite a bit; reminded me a lot of a kind of cross between American Horror Story and The Shining.

Dark Sky films can pretty much do no wrong in my eyes.

2018: September 19th - New Cocksure Album!

Holy cow, there's a new Cocksure album out! Listen to the way that synth comes in at 1:19 - old school never sounded so good!

NCBD and I am SUPER excited because the first installment of Batman: Damned hits today:

Also, I've been eager for more Seven To Eternity since it returned from hiatus last month (feels longer), so it's nice to see a new one. And what an awesome, Saga-like cover, despite the fact the book bears little resemblance to Saga; they are both awesome in very different ways.

It's going to be a good week!

Playlist from Tuesday, 9/18:

M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
Cocksure - Be Rich
Elder - Dead Roots Stirring
Tennis System - Pain EP
Jucifer - War Bird
The Atlas Moth - The Old Believer
Yob - Our Raw Heart

Card of the day:

Second iteration of this card in a row (I didn't pull yesterday). I finished Please Believe Me, however became reticent to submit it to the magazine I had planned to due to the fact that in their voluminous "What we don't want" list - which is hysterical reading - they mention anything that requires a 'vestigial belief in Judeo-Christian beliefs'. My story does not, however, the first line of the story, which is meant to be ultimately metaphorical and initially disorientating, is "It was a Thursday in September when seventy-three-year-old Heddie Larsen met the devil." I can just see an overworked slush pile operator reading that and moving no further with it. I thought about changing the line, but it would change the story, so in keeping with my draw today, I will wait and send them the results of the next journey, read: story, which I've already begun mapping out and is tentatively titled "Growth Spurt." It's the closest thing to hard Sci Fi I have written thus far. Think Primer meets Slither.

2018: May 30th

I do eat meat, but I usually feel 50% guilty about that. Still love this track, though.

Re-watched The Void last night. This is about my fourth viewing. I love this movie. In fact, I think it's probably the best horror movie - or at least my personal favorite - of the last twenty years.

Playlist from yesterday:

The Veils - Total Depravity
Budapest Festival Orchestra - Igor Stravinsky - The Firebird Suite
Eagulls - Ullages
Godflesh - Post Self
Grinderman - Eponymous
High on Fire - Snakes of the Divine
Bloodbath - Breeding Death
Bells into Machines - Your Crime Scene E.P.
Zombi - Spirit Animal
Sunn O))) - The Grimm Robe Demos
Underworld/Iggy Pop - Bells & Circles single
Underworld - Barbara Barbara, we face a shining future

Card of the day:

I'm choosing a straight interpretation of this one. Let's see what happens.

2018: May 27th 11:10 AM

Been leaning heavily on Cocksure lately. Such a great band. I've also been the most scatter brained I've ever been as I continue to try and drastically up my output on the T12 project. Yesterday was a total fail, today will NOT be.

I watched The Interior last night on Shudder. I absolutely LOVED this movie and will tell you nothing about it, not even post a trailer, while at the same time adamantly suggesting you check it out. Not for everyone, but those who dig it will really dig it.

Playlist from yesterday:

Burzum - Filosfem
Ben Frost - By the Throat
Cocksure - T.V.M.A.L.S.V.
Alkaline Trio - Crimson
Deftones - Gore

Card for the day:

My favorite in the Sword suit. From the Grimoire: "Indicates greater objectivity/clarity. Healthy balance of emotions and intellect. Good time to make decisions."

Interesting then that I'm drafting an ad campaign for my book and having to make decisions, was actually just questioning my decision making seconds before pulling this card.

Cocksure - Razor Invader

AH! The new Cocksure came out a week ago today and I haven't been able to get it yet. I would have just pre-ordered it but I was traveling and thought I'd be able to finagle a grab on the go, however it just didn't work like that. The Ghost record was easy to come by last week - I walked into a bestbuy and walked out five minutes later with Meliora in hand. Cocksure's Corporate_Sting isn't the kind of record a bb would carry because, well frankly, I was kinda shocked they carry any music at all anymore. And there are NO record stores on the Southside of Chi town anymore (sheds a tear for Threshold Music).

Well, I'm back in LA and have a writing session in Hollywood tonight so you can bet your sweet behind I will be stopping at Amoeba. I simply can NOT wait any longer for the new one by Chris Connelly and Jason Novak!

Cocksure - Klusterfuck Kulture

Recently my good friend Chris turned me on to the fact that Chris Connelly has a new band with Jason Novak of Acuman Nation. The band is called Cocksure and their debut EP Klusterfuck Kulture is available for a mere $3.99 at the bandcamp linked above. This is easily my most listened to new music of the year, and I've only had the thing for about a week (Thanks again Chris!). It's fantastic - a perfect synthesis of everything great about old school industrial but without feeling like a throwback or re-hashed ground. I spent the week in the cryo-lab with this spinning over and over on my ipod, six, seven listens in a row, each time finding something new to love about it.

I read this somewhere however now I can't find the confirmation, but I believe the full album is apparently due next month in August on, of all labels... WAX TRAX! Now that is fucking awesome. Both Touch and Go and Wax Trax pressing new music for the first time in years this year? Awesome.

CORRECTION: The single was on Wax Trax, the album, out August 12th, can be pre-ordered now on Metropolis Records.

* I love most incarnations of Ministry but Connelly-era is my favorite
