Remember last Friday when I drew the Four of Swords: Truce?

This was the result. It pays to temper your outrage and anger with time and distance. And it also pays to have a good amount of humility and admit when you've kinda been a dick.

October 8: Type O Negative - Creepy Green Light

Although I'd been teasing it for a few days, yesterday I finally fell down the Type O Negative well. It felt GREAT. I swear, I'm not one to say that any one band is 'my favorite band,' but if there's a band that fits 'me' best, it's most likley Type O. I miss them intensely.

I'll take this opportunity to mention that I've dropped the 'Isolation' title from the blog because between two outings to the Drive-In with Ray, the hotel we stayed in after Saturday's Lynch Triple feature (terrifying - imagine 100+ weather and a courtyard with a pool thronged with people, roving packs of maskless children, etc. Fucking petri dish), and visiting Butcher and his family, the isolation phase has been broken and, even if I remain isolated again going forward, that particular spell is broken. I'm still undecided if I will change the name of the blog again. We'll see.

31 Days of Halloween:

1) Tales of Halloween: Sweet Tooth/The Wolf Man (1941)
2) From Beyond/Monsterland: Port Fourchon, Louisiana/Tales of Halloween: The Night Billy Raised Hell/Tales of Halloween: Trick
3) Mulholland Drive/Creepshow (1982): The Crate
4) Waxwork
5) Synchronic/Bad Hair
6) Dolls
7) Lovecraft Country Ep. 8/Tales of Halloween: The Weak and the Wicken/Tales of Halloween: The Grim Grinning Ghost

Soon:

Chalk this one up to something I just heard mentioned on the Bret Easton Ellis podcast but never actually thought would be made. Via the mighty Bloody Disgusting, Tim Hunter - who is listed here as "a director of Breaking Bad" and, while that is accurate, a Director I have loved since I saw his 1986 flick River's Edge, which, like Smiley Face Killers, stares Crispin Glover, another total draw for me. Hunter has mostly done TV through the years, but its been a lot of the stuff I like. Back in high school, when I first saw River's Edge, his name was already known to me by way of the three stellar episodes of Twin Peaks Season Two he directed. From there, the list includes a lot, but specific to my viewing, Deadwood, AHS, and yes, Breaking Bad. Anyway, this trailer isn't blowing me away, but I'll definitely be checking this one out on VOD come December 8th, just to support it.

Perhaps a little bit of interior harmony as I (hopefully) head in to a mellower day at the Biorepository and have begun working on the book again, Writer's Block be damned. (It's not Writer's Block, it's exhaustion).

Isolation: Day 195 - New Zeal and Ardor!

Musick:

Fuck yes! I'm loving these new songs. These plus "Baphomet", whick K and I heard the band premiere live at the Roxy two years ago now, are going to make for a great new set of tunes.

Watch:

I'll be driving out to Montclair this evening for the Premier of Brandon Cronenberg's new film Possessor, and in celebration of that, last night I rewatched his first film AntiViral.

There is no other film out there like this film. It's a fucking masterpiece, and so much closer to reality than I can believe. However, I remember thinking the same thing when I watched it eight years ago, and since we haven't progressed into this future anymore in that time, I'd have to say Antiviral feels almost like an alternate timeline Earth, albeit one that really brushes up against ours.

Playlist:

The Veils - Total Depravity
The Thirsty Crows - Hangman's Noose
Emma Ruth Rundle and Thou - The Valley (pre-release single)
Zeal and Ardor - Tuskegee (pre-release single)
Ozzy Osbourne - The Blizzard of Ozz

Also, I don't want to sound like I'm kneeling before the algorithm, but this week's Apple Music "Favorites Mix" based on my listening turned out pretty sweet. I spent a good deal of time the last two days with Audible's Sandman adaptation - yes, I'm going through it very slowly to make it last, however, once I hit The Doll's House - my favorite Sandman story and one of my favorite stories ever regardless - I've been unable to get it out of my head. here's that mix:

A nice inclination for my first night out in the world since this entire 2020 fiasco began. I can't pretend I haven't become a little agoraphobic again, and driving 54 miles out to spend an evening in a drive-in theature, while inherently awesome sounded, fills me with a small modicum of dread. Here's to holding this card's image in my head all day and using it to sooth any 'rough patches.'

Orville Peck - Queen of the Rodeo

I love the way, between this and the AHS 10 Cast announcement video published last week, Peck has swung back around and recaptured my imagination of late. Not that I ever leave the record very far behind - it's a staple and feels like it will be for the rest of my life - but it feels strangely timely again.

Saturday night K and I, along with 3/4 of the rest of The Horror Vision crew went to the theatre and supported the big-box roll out for Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala's The Lodge. Fantastic film! I've jokingly been referring to it as the, "Feel good hit of the summer," simply to help me process just how damn dark it is, but overall, I really liked this one. Afterward, we recorded an episode of the podcast, so that'll be up in a couple of days or so.

A relaxing weekend, if a chilly one (I know, I know. I can hear my family and friends in the Frigid Midwest. Fuck me, California boy). Stability achieved after a stressful week on-call for Jury Duty. I got a lot of work done on Friday and Saturday, saw a great movie, and now it's time to use that clear head and march right back to work. Turning in a packet of docs to a collaborator today, hopefully we'll see some movement with that (eventually; long submission process), and it's back to my outlines for Shadow Play books Two and Three, which are more finished than not.

2019: July 2nd - New Collaboration from Uniform and The Body!

The Body is clearly the Brian Michael Bendis of bands, as they are more prolific than anyone I've encountered maybe ever. The new album - which is another collaboration with Uniform (see last year's Mental Wounds Not Healing) - is titled Everything That Dies Someday Comes Back and is available for pre-order from Sacred Bones HERE.

New episode of The Horror Vision is up! Topics of discussion include but are not limited to Godzilla: King of Monsters, The Perfection, The Dark Backward, and our movie of the week, Josh Lobo's I Trapped the Devil! Check it out:

K and I watched the first episode of Nicolas Winding Refn's Too Old To Die Young last night. Wow. I've been excited for this for a while, not only because it's Refn doing long form, but Criminal scribe Ed Brubaker is involved with the writing! What a collaboration, eh? Anyway, the first episode is eerie as hell in a completely down to Earth, Neo Noir way, which was exactly what I'd hoped for this series. Can't wait to dive back in!

Balance in a time of crisis. Unexpected Symmetry. Hmm... I'm reading this more about the little swords at the top and bottom, the small details you can overlook when focused on the major plot points.

2018: October 4th

K and I continued our 31 days of Horror last night. In spite of a late start, or rather because of it, we went with a shorter flick, specifically Stuart Gordon's entry into the Masters of Horror library. As an adaptation and modernization of H.P. Lovecraft's Dreams in the Witchhouse, Gordon's piece works pretty well. It's been a minute since I read the story - going to try and remedy that this weekend - but from what I remember of it Gordon does a good job. Brown Jenkins, in particular, is pretty creepy. And kudos for going all the way with the ending.

I've been in a Gordon mood lately. Chomping at the bit to re-watch Dagon, as it's my favorite by him and I haven't seen it since the big screen at the Warner Grand back at either 2011 or 2012's H.P. Lovecraft fest. Also, ordered Arrow Film's Re-animator, a film I've only seen once and a long time ago. Back also around 2011/2012 I saw Gordon's musical stage adaptation of Re-animator at the Steve Allen Theatre, and I loved it so much in that form I've been afraid the film just won't hold up since. Pretty sure that's unfounded, and Arrow's release is packed with extras, so I pulled the trigger on finally adding that to the collection.

Okay, so that puts our 31 Days of Horror list at:

10/01) Summer of 84
10/02) Rope
10/03) Dreams in the Witch House

Playlist from 10/03:

2018: June 7th

My good friend Ray sent me an Apple Music link to this album quite some time ago and I only just now got around to working it in for listen - when I'm writing everyday as I have been, spending so much time dialed into a particular frame of mind, I curate everything I listen to pretty rigorously. Thus, trying something new - especially if it's something I'll love - might totally skew my routine. I tried two new things yesterday - Dessa's Badly Broken Code, which is fantastic but completely out of my element at the moment, and Nabihah Iqbal's Weighing of the Heart. The latter instantly bewitched me, and it fits right in where I need it to, so it's been on heavy, heavy rotation all day and will most likely stay there for some time. Above is my favorite track, thus far.

New Drinking, Fighting, F*&king, and Crying is up HERE.

Playlist from Odin's Day, 6/07/18:

Pigface - A New High in Low
oOoOO & Islamic Grrls - Faminine Mystique
White Ring & oOoOO - Roses/Seaww - Emotion Single
Dessa - A Badly Broken Code
Nabihah Iqbal - Weighing of the Heart
Zombi - Shape Shift
Ghost - Prequelle

Take the high ground for perspective. That might come in handy during the 4 hour meeting I have today at work.
