New Tricky: Nice.

I'm not going to lie, I LOVE Maxinquaye, but a lot of the other Tricky I've heard has not interested me at all. Granted, I haven't investigated everything the man has put out, but I tend to prefer the leanings of his one time collaborator extraordinaire Martina Topley-Bird's stuff. But it's been a great day for new release info and I had to click on Brooklyn Vegan's post about False Idols, the forth-coming Tricky record. So far, I'm digging what I'm hearing. Boards of Canada - Mystery Solved

Mucho thanks to Brooklyn Vegan, Pitchfork and all the other great sites that did the research on this night and day and have made me very happy by confirming the following: The new Boards of Canada album is titled Tomorrow's Harvest and will be released June 11th on Warp.

Why is it whenever I hear or see the name of this Shakespeare play I hear or see 'Much to do about Humping' first? I feel like it was on a marquee in an episode of the Simpsons, back in like the fourth or fifth season? Anyone?

Red Trailer

So as a kid in the 80's I loved action movies. Then I grew up, the 90's hit and in a weird synchronization of timing, it seemed like Hollywood matured about the same time my friends and I did. Action movies all but went away (well, they never really go away, but Mr. Tarantino and friends helped relax their grip on the vernacular of film) and smart-talking, indie cinema Savoir Faire took over. These days action movies are back, but in an upgraded, definitely gone-through-the-meta-paradigm-and-come-out-the-other-side way. The thing is, the good ones know what they are and they don't want you to take them seriously - they can barely take themselves seriously. And when in the hands of good actors this works. The first Red was a good example of this. It excels in its meta-snarkyness in all the ways that a franchise like The Expendable does not*, wh It caught my eye because it's based on a comic by Warren Ellis. It was pretty damn good (I think the only thing I disliked was the music). This one looks right in line with the first, and it seems as though the 'amping up' that is always sure to happen in an action sequel will even be done in a tasteful, elastic way. Not just "MORE BLOOD! MORE EXPLOSIONS!" but Dame Helen Mirren with two guns and Storm Shadow in tow.

*Admittedly I've only seen the second Expendable, and in spite of myself I did enjoy it (though its visceral violence quota was a bit much for me) but it isn't a 'justifiable' 'Like' the way Red is.

Boards of Canada Mystery Deepens with... A tv Commerical?

This apparently aired on Cartoon Network's Toonami block last night, so thanks to Pitchfork for reporting it, as I do not have a television set that plays anything but DVD's, let alone cable. And go to Pitchfork again here to read about one of these surprises I missed, where NPR's All Things Considered and Radio 1's Zane Lowe show each featured a further mystery snippet.

Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God

I'm in full Blut mode today (much to my wife's chagrin). One of the greatest metal albums ever, but you have to have the right ears to 'hear' it. Many don't - I'm not trying to be elitest, it's just not an easy piece of music to love. I almost dismissed it at first too. Then I 'heard'.

It's not much as far as actuallygiving us an idea what the new Boards of Canada will sound like (well, you can tell it sounds like BOC, but you know what I mean), however the mystery they're mixing up with it is juicy junior. Wow. Just found band and I really like them. Like a large, dark drill that grinds through the armor of your skull and fills your head with shadows. And the desciption, "Cascadian Black Metal"? AWESOME. Subgenres may be pretentious and unnecessary, but sometimes they just fit!

God is LSD - Girl on Fire

It's been a while since I dug this out - one of my all time favorite records. I special ordered God is LSD's Spirit of Suicide from Red Tower in Orland Park back in the early 90's after reading a write-up of it in Subculture magazine. It didn't disappoint then and still holds strong today. This is my favorite song on the record, although, "Trippin... and Fucking the World" is a close second.

It's been a while since I had a GILSD jag - 'bout to remedy that.

I'm over my hang-ups with the album - I listened to Welcome Oblivion the other night two or three times in a row while reading Brian Michael Bendis X-Men comics and absolutely LOVED it. (was initially disheartened to find several of the tracks from Dec 2012's An Omen e.p. on the full length as well. I've pretty much just combined them into a giant playlist in Itunes).

I'd never heard of this until the trailer popped up after something I watched recently on bloody disgusting. From the Mind of Robert Rodriguez obviously was a great way to set-up the appropriately sparse images of this trailer for an apparently "lost" film that premiered at some festivals back in 2005 but has been in limbo since. It finally received VOD and DVD release recently and definitely looks worth a watch.

New Order - Crystal

I woke up with this song on my mind. It makes me think of my friend Joe Grez and the first time I heard the song, in Dublin with him at the wonderful Whelan's venue. We saw a couple great bands that night, New Prayer Breakfast and the inimitable Daemian Frost, who I really need to get on the ball, rip their ep and post it. SOOOOOO awesome.

Still no interest in seeing this movie, but this is fantastic. So weird to see M83 introduced as a string section along w/ Anthony Gonzalez and crew. I can't be happier for their success (though I still wonder why Midnight City is the only single that's blown up when there's like five or six from Hurry Up, We're Dreaming and they're ALL AWESOME!

This and Nick Cave and the Bad Seed's Push the Sky Away are easily going to rank in my top ten of the year.

Savages - Shut Up

New Savages. I'm liking this band more and more. Had a chance to see them last Thursday at the Echo (I think it was the Echo). I should have gone, but when wake up time is 430AM, it's hard to head out for a nine PM show.

And that's me done being acting like an old fuck for a while. 37 is not that old, especially when stoked on music like this all the time.

Ghost BC - Stream Infestissumam

Pitchfork has had this up for at least a week, but after going to metal sucks and seeing this handy dandy little spotify widget at the tail end of a post with highlights from the band's recent Reddit AMA, I had to add it here as well. I received my copy of Infestissumam today via my lovely wife and it really is wonderful. I like it better than the first record, Opus Eponymous. Really great and the final track, Monstrance Clock, is vying for my favorite on the record (at this time). Here's what metal sucks quoted wikipedia for definition of Monstrance Clock:

"The Monstrance clock, or mirror clock, developed during the Renaissance. The monstrance was a cross-shaped gold or silver vessel which played an important part in church ritual and often incorporated sacred figures as part of the design. The clock made use of a rotating ball at the top or in the base to indicate the time of day. Monstrance clocks and crucifix clocks remained fashionable until the eighteenth century."

New Track from The Ocean's upcoming Pelagial Record

Thanks to blabbermouth.net for posting these. I cannot wait for Pelagial - The Ocean (sometimes known as The Ocean Collective) became one of my favorite bands a couple of years ago when I discovered 2004's Fluxion. After chewing on that record for about a year I dove in and bought everything else the band had done. I loved all of it and constantly marveled at the versatility with which Robin Straps and crew turned any conventions associated with heavy music on their ear without ever sacrificing the 'raging slab' factor of the art. Then in 2010 the group put out two records - Heliocentric and Anthropocentric. They are an examination of religion, but not in the typical metal fashion. Both of those records - which saw the group with a new vocalist - are absolute masterpieces that transcend any genre trappings even more than the group already had. I can't say this enough, they are amazing. Fans of Mike Patton and Faith No More may especially want to look into them (they even had the amazing packaging for both records designed by long-time Patton art designer Martin Kvamme).

How to Destroy Angels out in the Desert

While HTDA's first full-length release Welcome Oblivion disappointed me a bit when I purchased it and found most of the contents of their previous EP on it, I still really like the band. I love pretty much everything Mr. Reznor has ever done and Atticus Ross is just a freakin' genius, has been since I learned to spell his name back when Barry Adamson's MASTERPIECE As Above, So Below came out and I rabidly memorized the liner notes as it left its first of many deep, invigorating impressions on my soul.

Anyway...

Every image I've seen of HTDA live has been a thing of beauty - their stage lighting/set-up is nothing short of amazing and looks as though it would fit their music perfectly. Thanks to Pitchfork for linking this, hopefully more will surface.

And despite the disappointment, Welcome Oblivion is still a great piece of music.

Blur Live at that Place out in the Desert

While there's nothing I could think of that I would like to do less than attend a massive, 150+ band concert out in the middle of the desert supported by a shit-ton of corporate sponsors, I won't say I'm not going to cherry pick from the wealth of footage that is sure to arrive hot on said event's heels. A reunited Blur performing There's No Other Way is - in my opinion - a great place to start.

GIJOE animated Movie (80's) Intro

That last post made me think of this and so I had to look to see if it was on youtube (everything is on the youtubes - soon you will be too!).

The Cobra parts still give me chills - the Joe parts are blatantly goodie goodie. But I love the animation used here - even if the movie is pretty goofy.

The Afghan Whigs - Love Crimes

I'm not really a fan of Frank Ocean. Nothing against him, and it could just be reaction against seeing his name EVERYWHERE for the last eight months, but when I gave the album a run through it didn't grab me. Might down the road - definitely not ruling that out. Especially after falling in love with the Whigs' version of this song, which dropped like a year ago and I'm just getting around to posting.

NEW music from The Devil's Blood is here!!! White Storm of Teeth

Yes, The Devil's Blood is broken up, however if you recall the link I posted upon learning this contained an interview with chief songwriter/guitarist Selim Lemouchi where he stated that the album they had been working on, along with a bunch of other demo stuff, would indeed be released. Well, here's the first track from the forthcoming third and final album, III: Tabula Rasa, or Death And The Seven Pillars. This is apparently a "demo" version but it doesn't sound too much like a demo - it's not super polished, but it's polished. Really dig this - reminds me a bit of a cross between Feverdance and Everlasting Saturnalia from the band's previous record The Thousandfold Epicenter. You can pre-order III here.

Vindsval's The Eye

Let's trace the origin of a post like this, not just because someone out there might find it interesting, but because I'll find it interesting, as I've been a pretty rabid Blut Aus Nord fan for about two years now but have never heard of Vindsval's The Eye before.

Okay, so first, as I do at least once a day, I went to the wonderful heavenisanincubator blogspot and read up one a bunch of music I'd never heard before. Good times on The Incubator - always. Anyway, I found a post about Kylesa's Vulture's Landing and was specifically interested by The Incubator's description of Kylesa's sound as containing a "shoegaze" element. I followed the embedded link to Kylesa's label Season of Mist (if I'd be really paying attention it would have dawned on me that I was onto something, as I just re-read Neil Gaiman's Sandman vol. 4 Seasons of Mist and once again it has remained a slowly disintegrating echo in my head since). I looked around Season of Mist's sight for a few minutes, noting various bands on the label and then with the shoegaze + metal thing did what it always does and triggered me to go google search Blut Aus Nord - specifically looking for their label, Debemur Morti Productions' site. No matter where I go to read about Blut Aus Nord and their principal founder/creator Vindsval I always find something new, especially on DMP's site. And low and behold there it was - news that a sequel to the above-embedded album - written and performed entirely by Vindsval from what I've been able to find - 1997's Supremacy by The Eye.

National Twin Peaks Day!!!

So I had no idea but today is apparently national Twin Peaks day. Thank You to my good friend Missi for informing me of this. To celebrate I'm sitting in a coffee shop, drinking damn good black coffee and thinking about maybe stopping at the market afterward to buy a pie. The above picture is from a website I just found called Welcome to Twin Peaks. It's pretty awesome.

Back in 2000 Mr. Brown, myself and our friends Two Foot and The Cap'm drove across country, from Chicago to the areas where the show was filmed. It was the - I believe - sixth year of the event. We got to drink and hang out with some of the stars and I watched my friend Two Foot threaten to beat Jacques Renault's ass (the guy was a dick - probably from Leo kicking his ass all the time). Some day I'll right it all down, it was pretty odd, as a Twin Peaks fest should be.

They are having a new iteration of the festival this year. You can read about it/book tickets here. I'm not one hundred percent certain this event is put on by the same folks who did the one we went to - the guys who used to publish the wonderful and strange Wrapped in Plastic magazine, but it'd probably still be a cool event to go to. Especially because Washington state is just so damn beautiful.

Hot-off the heels of my Friday night viewing of Evil Dead - which I LOVED and most definitely is NOT a remake - I'm still reeling with all things Evil and Dead. Thus, I thought I'd post this little gem that the always awesome and informative (and fun!) Aintitcoolnews posted recently.

This is still one of the most badass songs I've ever heard. In my quest to re-read/read Neil Gaiman's Sandman from the beginning through to the end Bauhaus just jumps off the music shelf. Along with Joy Division and The Cure, Tones on Tail and The Smiths (esp. Meat is Murder for Vol. 4 Seasons of Mist) Bauhaus is a perfect soundtrack for Neil Gaiman's lush dreamscape set on the outmost fringes of the old DCU.  I'm currently reading Vol. 5, A Game of You, one of the volumes I'd not read before (I started reading the book during it's initial run with The Kindly Ones, which I believe was either the second or third-to-last volume. Of course I went back and snagged Preludes and Nocturnes, The Doll's House and Dream Country as they were published in trades and then left what was essentially the middle of the saga untouched on my "To buy and Read" list. However, I very much wait for the particular moods for music/film and comics/books to overtake me before I lock into them, i.e. I can't just pick up Sandman and start reading it anymore than I can just through on Bauhaus any old time. I have to be in that particular headspace. I've begun re-reading Sandman many times over the years, as those first three volumes are among my most read comics. However I can't always sustain the mood to go all the way through, not with all the bloody distractions of everyday life. I've also often hit the $$$ wall, starting it and making my way through the beginning volumes only to find I didn't quite have it in my budget to buy the three or four volumes I was missing. Recent bursday presents from my wife have solved that particular problem).

Whenever a comic or book strikes such a strong harmonic frequency with a particular band or album I always wonder if the author themselves - or in this case any of the awesome artists involved - listening to that same music at the time of creating. And if that is indeed the case, the fact that you can pick that up suggests to me that the author/artist's hands are literally transducing the energy in its audio wave form into energy in a visible form, like a microphone is a transducer that takes audio waves and changes them into the physical rearrangement of magnetic iron particles (on analog tape) or 1's and 0's in the digital domain?

Something to think about.

Didn't always agree with the man, but he was a strong, wonderful person and I'm sad to see him go. One of two icons from my home town. I grew up watching these guys and they were the first adults I saw take film as seriously as I did. Of course back then I disagreed with most of what they said and just watched the show for the movie clips - I thought movies with Arnold were great and these guys' criticisms of them were ridiculous.

Boy did I learn.

Rest in Peace to You, Mr. Ebert. Reunited with Your friend I'd like to think there's some hearty discussion going on somewhere in the After-Realms.

It's apparently the 30th Anniversary of "Sports" - not the pastime, the album. I love that album, just like I love Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho. Not super crazy about the film, not because I think it's bad but I'm just so attached to what the book does to the reader - really, really puts them in Patrick Bateman's head (a fucked up place to be) and by nature a film has trouble doing that to the same degree a book - especially a book written by Bret Easton Ellis - can. But I always loved this scene and this is just fantastic.

And then there's Weird Al, who is all kinds of awesome, even if I really only listen from a distance. But the man's a comedy music institution.

This band... my god. Until In Excess, Imperceptible UFO came out Tuesday. I'm a douche and still haven't had a chance to buy what should have been a "day of" pilgrimage to the record store for me.

Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives

When we went to see Drive two years or so ago it was at my friend Shailesh's recommendation. Shailesh knew I would skip it if he didn't say something. Turns out my wife and I loved it. As we left the theatre that night I kept saying, "Nicolas Winding Refn - where have I heard that name before?" I imdb'd him and realized he was responsible for the film Bronson, which I'd seen a year and some change previously and fallen for so hard that I immediately went out and tried to buy a copy of the DVD the day after the viewing. It'd been a while since a movie like that had come along at that time.

Now this.

Ataque de Pánico!!! (Evil Dead)

You know, I just put two and two together for the first time. I remember when this short went viral about three years ago - I loved it and the story that followed about how Raimi supposedly flew the creator up to LA from his native Uruguay and put him to work for Ghost House made me even more happy. It reinforced what a great person and outside-the-box filmmaker Raimi is. Flash forward a couple years and Ataque de Pánico! has been off my radar long enough for it never to have dawned on me that this was the same guy directing the Evil Dead remake.

Now I'm even more excited and honestly, I didn't think that was possible.

CHVRCHES - Now is Not the Time

The Flaming Lips - Ashes in the Air

Today the new Besnard Lakes album comes out, as well as the latest from Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine, which is Mr. Biafra's first concept album - I think - since The Dead Kennedy's Frankenchrist. I say this to help stomach the fact that the new Flaming Lips record - The Terror - isn't out for another two weeks. The video above was just released - I found it on the always diligent Brooklyn Vegan - but was from the  The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends.
